Van Toeka Af — Living Legends Recognition Series
01A Day in the Life
Campaign Communications
An Invitation to Celebrate.
Before the celebration came the invitation. A short-form animated piece introducing the occasion, its significance and the people coming together to honour a remarkable creative life.
Created as a square-format digital invitation, bringing the recognition series' visual identity into motion.
Pitika Ntuli was born in Springs on the East Rand and grew up in Masekeni, near Witbank. A sculptor, poet, writer and academic, he came of age in a country that would send him into exile: after a year in solitary confinement on death row in Eswatini, international pressure secured his release and he lived in the United Kingdom for the remaining years of apartheid.
He trained at the Pratt Institute in New York and Brunel University in London, taught at colleges including Camberwell College of Art, Central Saint Martins and the University of East London, and returned home with the democratic transition to lecture in fine arts at Wits and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His sculptures and poems — shaped by African spirituality, identity and the legacy of colonialism — have been shown across Europe, the United States and South Africa.
